Sweet Mandarin: Playwriting Workshop - JOCKEY CLUB NEW ARTS POWER

Sweet Mandarin: Playwriting Workshop

This programme will be conducted in Cantonese only.

Participating Artist:

  • Wu Hoi-fai (Artistic Director, Pants Theatre Production)
  • Cheang Tik-ki (Award-winning playwright)

Many theatre works are adapted from fiction or life, as two elements prevail – stories and people.

Sweet Mandarin is adapted from Helen Tse’s evocative memoir about her family of the Chinese diaspora. Born and raised in the UK, Helen decided to leave her job as a lawyer and plunged into cooking and hospitality. Her decision to open the restaurant “Sweet Mandarin” was not supported by her parents, who had been drained by their diaspora and the heat of their lifelong workplace, the kitchen. Sweet Mandarin is a delicate process of Helen reviewing her cultural identity as a British born Chinese as well as a collection of memories of her displaced family members. Menu on offer: A bittersweet story of a Chinese immigrant family spanning three generations.

The workshop will be led by director Wu Hoi-fai  and award-winning playwright Cheang Tik-ki, who will share the tips of theatrical adaptation. Through writing and discussions, participants will study Sweet Mandarin and learn to make artistic choices about “to keep or not to keep”.

  • No prior experience needed, everyone interested in playwriting is welcomed.
  • This programme is suitable for aged 16 or above only.
  • Application will be open from early September. Please stay tuned for details.

Hongkongers have a “hybrid” identity — a combination of Western and Chinese

Pants Theatre Production’s Sweet Mandarin tells the story of the remarkable journey of three sisters who are the third-generation descendants of Hong Kong immigrants. Born and raised in the UK, they were uncomfortable with their Chinese identity until a family trip to Hong Kong changed their minds. While the play is about various generations of diasporas being torn between their roots and the society in which they live, Wu Hoi-fai, Artistic Director of Pants Theatre Production and the director of the play, did not expect its rerun in 2020 would come in the midst of such an unstable political climate. “To go, or not to go – that is the question.”
